Personal health and dental plans can cover prescription drugs, dental check-ups and cleanings, vision care, and paramedical services such as physiotherapy, chiropractic and massage therapy. Higher-tier plans add major dental work and more drug coverage. They are built for self-employed people, retirees, and families without group benefits.
Many plans have waiting periods for some benefits, especially major dental work, which may only be covered after the first 12 months. Basic benefits such as prescriptions and check-ups often start sooner. Each insurer sets its own rules.
Yes. Some personal health plans are guaranteed issue, with no medical questions, although benefits may be lower. Others ask health questions and may exclude a specific condition. We compare both types to find the right fit.
If you leave a job or retire, ask whether your group plan offers a conversion plan that you can join without medical questions, usually within 60 or 90 days of leaving. Buying a personal plan within that window can also give you guaranteed-acceptance options. Call us before the deadline and we will compare your choices.
Ontario no longer has a 3-month OHIP waiting period, but it can still take time to apply and receive your health card. Until then you can be billed directly for care. A private newcomer or visitor plan covers emergency care during that gap. Ideally buy it before you arrive.
Yes. Most universities in Ontario automatically enrol international students in UHIP (University Health Insurance Plan). For 2026-27, the UHIP student premium is $948 for 12 months. Many colleges use their own mandatory plans. Students who arrive before their school plan starts, or whose plan has gaps, may need a private student or visitor plan.
Usually not. If your school enrols you in a mandatory plan such as UHIP, you normally cannot opt out. Private student insurance is useful for coverage before the school plan begins, for family members, or for schools that do not include health coverage.
Claims are handled directly by your insurance company. Complete the insurer’s claim form for your coverage and send it to them with all supporting documents. The claims contact details are listed on your policy.
