Did your parents land in Kitchener last week without insurance? Or is a visit running longer than the policy end date? You can still buy coverage after arrival. But the rules change once someone is already here, and every day without a plan is a day with no protection from hospital bills. Here is what to do today.
Many visitors arrive in Canada without health insurance, or find out their coverage from home doesn't work here. The good news: you can still buy visitor insurance after you arrive. This guide explains how it works and what to watch for.
Yes. Most Canadian insurers sell visitor insurance to people who are already in Canada. You will need your arrival date, the dates you want coverage, and answers to some medical questions.
When you buy after arrival, most plans apply a waiting period before illness is covered. It is often 48 hours to 8 days, depending on the insurer and your age. During the waiting period:
Some insurers waive the waiting period if you buy within a short time after arrival or if you are replacing another plan with no gap. Ask us which plans offer this.
Pre-existing conditions are judged as of the date the policy starts. If a condition has been stable for the insurer's required period (often 90 or 180 days), many plans can cover it. Any symptoms or changes in treatment before the policy starts can affect coverage, so answer the medical questions carefully.
If you already have visitor insurance and plan to stay longer, extend the policy before it ends. Extending is much easier than buying a new policy after a gap.
Most families we help in Kitchener-Waterloo are inviting parents from India. Before they buy, they ask the same four questions:

Visitors are not covered by OHIP. If a visitor needs care at Grand River Hospital, St. Mary's General Hospital, Cambridge Memorial Hospital or Guelph General Hospital, the hospital bills at non-resident rates. Without a plan, the family usually pays.
New permanent residents: Ontario removed the 3-month OHIP waiting period. You still must apply in person at ServiceOntario and be approved. A short private plan can protect you until OHIP is in place.
International students: Students at Ontario universities are usually covered by UHIP. For 2026-27, from September 1, 2026, UHIP is $948 for a student, $1,896 with one dependant, and $2,844 with two or more. A visiting parent of a student still needs visitor insurance.

Example: Imagine a grandmother arrives in Waterloo in October. The family buys a plan three weeks later. A sprained ankle the next day may be covered, because accidents usually are. A cough that began the week before the purchase may not be. Buying sooner reduces this risk.
